Parvin Islam was gang-raped and strangled to death in 2015
A Khulna court has sentenced five people to death in the father-daughter double murder case.
The convicted were fined Tk1 lakh each for raping Parvin Sultana, 26, a cash officer at Exim Bank’s Khulna branch.
They were also fined Tk10,000 for the killing of Parvin and her father Elias Chowdhury, 70.
Khulna Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal-3 Judge Mohammad Mohiduzzaman handed over the verdict on Tuesday.
The convicted are – two brothers Pitil Islam and Shariful Islam, and their associates Polash, Sayeed, and Liton. Except for Shariful, the others are now in jail.
Special Public Prosecutor Advocate Farid Ahmed represented the state, Assistant Public Prosecutor Kazi Sabbir Ahmed and Advocate Md Mominul Islam represented the Khulna district unit of Bangladesh Manobadhikar Bastobayon Sangstha.
"We are satisfied with the verdict. We hope that this sentence will set an example for future rape incidents," Advocate Farid told Dhaka Tribune.
On September 19, 2015, Parvin was gang-raped and then she and her father, Elias, were strangled to death at their residence in Khulna's Buro Dargah area.
On the night of the murder, police recovered the bodies from the septic tank.
Rezaul Alam, the victim's brother, filed a rape and murder case against the accused with Labanchara police station on September 22, 2015.
Later in 2016, the case's investigation officer Md Kazi Babul submitted the charge sheet before the Khulna's Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's court.
