Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has pressed charges against Sonagazi Islamia Fazil (Degree) Madrasa’s Principal SM Sirajuddaula over sexually harassing his student Nusrat Jahan Rafi who was subsequently set on fire by his supporters for refusing to lift the charges.

Two months after the incident, Investigating Officer Shah Alam of the case filed the charge sheet before the court of Feni Senior Judicial Magistrate Zakir Hossain on Wednesday.

The hearing on the charge sheet is likely to take place on July 4, he said, adding: "The former principal has confessed to sexually harassing Nusrat.”

“He already gave a confession under section 164 in the murder case where he admitted to sexually harassing her (Nusrat) on March  27 which is why he did not need to give another statement,” he added.

According to sources, Sirajuddaula called Nusrat, an Alim examinee of the madrasa, to his office and tried to sexually harass her after which her mother filed a case against him with Sonagazi police station. He was sent to jail that very day.

On April 6, Nusrat was set on fire on the roof of the madrasa by people loyal to Sirajuddaula when she refused to withdraw the case filed by her mother. She succumbed to burn injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on April 10.
