Dr Chakraborty has been asked to appear before the court on next Tuesday

The High Court has summoned Dr Ashis Kumar Chakraborty, managing director of Universal Medical College and Hospital, to explain his position on allegations that the hospital continued “treatment” of a dead patient to drive up the bill.

Dr Chakraborty has been asked to appear before the court on next Tuesday.

The HC bench of Justice Jahangir Hossain and Md Riaz Uddin Khan passed the order after hearing an anticipatory bail petition on Tuesday.

According to the case lawyer, relatives of a dead patient alleged that Universal Medical College and Hospital kept a patient in treatment for an additional week after his death in a bid to drive up the bill.

The dead patient, Shahidul Islam, was undergoing treatment at the hospital with kidney complications from May 14.

Later, Shahidul’s son Kamal and Anawar-E-Taslima, chairman of Shristi Human Rights Society, were locked in a clash with hospital staff over the bills. The hospital filed a vandalism case against the two with Tejgaon police.

Barrister Sayedul Haque Suman filed anticipatory bail petitions on behalf of the two individuals with the High Court on Sunday.

The High Court bench granted anticipatory bail to Kamal and Anawar-E-Taslima and summoned the hospital’s managing director.
