Convict Omar Faruk is still at large while three others were present in the court
A Dhaka court sentenced three drug peddlers to life in prison, and handed down two years jail sentence to one, in a case filed on charges of possessing 2,300 bottles of Phensidyl in 2005.
Judge Md Akhtaruzzaman of the Dhaka Special Judge Court-5 handed down the verdict in presence of three convicts on Monday.
The convicts are: Omar Faruk alias Farurque, Md Khokon, and Md Anwar Hossain. They were also fined Tk 50,000 each, in default, one more year in prison term..
The court also sentenced another accused Md Jamal alias Rony to two years’ rigorous imprisonment for the same offence. He was also fined Tk 10,000, in default, six more months in jail will be added.
Of the convicts, Omar Faruk is still at large, while the other three were present in the court during delivery of the verdict.
The court in the verdict said, the convicts were given life in jail instead of death sentence, considering their ages, and other circumstantial evidences.
Earlier, the prosecution, and the defence completed their arguments, and the court recorded statements of seven prosecution witnesses including the complainant in the case.
According to the case history, a team of Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) raided the house of Haji Babla at Nilkhet in the capital’s Dhanmondi on February 9, 2005. The team apprehended Md Jamal alias Rony along with five bottles of Phensidyl.
Based on information provided by him, the DNC team also seized 2,295 bottles of Phensidyl, which were in the possession of the other three accused---Omar Faruk, Khokon, and Anwar.
DNC filed a case against the four with Dhanmondi Police Station under the Narcotics Control Act.
