A Chittagong tribunal has sentenced a man to death, for killing a seven-year old girl after raping her, two and a half years ago in Brahmanbaria.
Abdul Halim, Judge of Chittagong Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal handed down the verdict, in presence of the convict, in a packed courtroom on Monday.
The condemned, Arshadur Rahman was also fined Tk1 lakh.
Ayub Khan, public prosecutor of Chittagong Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal said, the court sentenced him to death as he was proven to be guilty.
According to the case dockets, on December 20, 2016, the seven-year old girl bought a hair band from Arshadur Rahman's stall in a village fair,.
Arshadur followed the girl as she was returning home from the fair alone. Around 7:30pm, Arshadur took her to a nearby jungle, raped her, and strangled her to death.
The police recovered her body the following day, and the victim's father lodged a case, under Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, in connection with the murder.
The charge was framed at Brahmanbaria district court.
Later, in January, 2018 , the case was transferred to Chittagong Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal, and after examining all the records and evidence, the tribunal awarded the death sentence.
