The court also fined the convicts Tk10,000 each
A court has sentenced two people to life imprisonment in a case filed over the rape and murder of a teenager, Nilufa Akter, in Comilla Sadar, eight years ago.
Judge MA Awal of Comilla Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal 1 court passed the order on Monday.
The court also fined the convicts Tk10,000 each.
One of the convicts, Abu Taleb, is currently in jail; the other convict, Joshna Begum, is a fugitive.
Abu Taleb, son of Mokbul Ahmed hailing from Matainkot village of Sadar South upazila, lured Nilufa Akter—daughter of Selim Mia from same village—with marriage, but raped and impregnated her.
Seven months later, on January 23, 2011—pressured into marriage by Nilufa’s family—Abu Taleb, with his associate Joshna Begum, set Nilufa on fire in front of her home.
Nilufa received 84% burns to her body from the incident and was admitted to the Comilla Medical College Hospital (CMCH). Later she was transferred to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) burn unit, where she died on January 31.
Before dying, she gave her statement to the magistrate on January 26. Her father filed a case against the two with Sadar South Model police station.
Sub Inspector Jahangir Alam, the then-investigation officer, submitted a charge sheet against the accused two on April 17, 2011.
After getting the statements from 18 witnesses, the judge ordered life imprisonment and a fine.
