The accused has also provided police with more key information surrounding the murder, says PBI
Jobayer Ahmed, one of the key accused named in the Nusrat Jahan Rafi murder case, has reportedly admitted that he was the one who set the 18-year-old Alim examinee on fire after pouring kerosene on her on April 6, police said.
Jobayer made the disclosure in a confessional statement made before the court of Feni Senior Judicial Magistrate Sharaf Uddin Ahmed on Sunday.
Police Bureau of Investigation’s (PBI) Chittagong Division Special SP Md Iqbal said that the magistrate recorded his statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure in the afternoon.
Briefing reporters at the court premises afterwards, he said: “Jobayer has confessed to directly taking part in the killing mission.
“He [Jobayer] has also provided us with more key information surrounding Nusrat’s murder. But we cannot disclose those details for the sake of our investigation.”
Jobayer, who was Nusrat’s classmate at Sonagazi Islamia Fazil (Degree) Madrasa, was arrested from Feni’s Sonagazi upazila on April 10. The next day, he was remanded for five days.
Jobayer’s involvement was confirmed in the confessional statements of the other two key accused, Nur Uddin and Shahadat Hossain Shamim.
While visiting the crime scene with Jobayer on Saturday, PBI recovered the burqa used in the arson attack from a nearby canal.
Besides Jobayer, seven other people — both accused and suspects — have given confessional statements in court so far.
They others are Nuruddin, Shahadat Hossain Shamim, Abdur Rahim Sharif, Abdul Kader, Umme Sultana Poppy, Kamrun Nahar Moni and Jabed Hossain.
So far, PBI has arrested 21 people connected with the case, and the prime accused, former madrasa principal SM Sirajuddaula, remains in police remand.
The other arrestees are ex-Awami League leader Maksud Alam, madrasa teacher Absar Uddin, Nusrat's classmates Ariful Islam, Nur Hossain, and Kefayet Ullah Joni, Md Alauddin, Shahidul Islam, Sirajaddaula's niece Umme Sultana Poppy, Jabed Hossain, Jobayer Hossain, Nuruddin, Shahadat Hossain, Md Shamim, Kamrunnahar Moni, Abdur Rahim Sharif, Hafez Abdul Kader, and Sonagazi upazila Awami League President Ruhul Amin.
Alim examinee Nusrat was set ablaze on the roof of the madrasa on the morning of April 6 by four burqa-clad assailants after she refused to withdraw a sexual assault case against Sirajuddaula.
The 18-year-old, with 80% burns on her body, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on April 10 after battling death for five days.
