Two more accused in the case over the murder of of Feni madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi, who was set on fire by burqa-clad youths on April 6 and died in hospital on April 10, have given their confessional statements before a court.
Accused Jabed Hossain and Kamrunnahar Moni gave their confessional statements before the court of Feni Senior Magistrate Sharaf Uddin Ahmed after being produced before it around 5pm on Saturday.
Later the same night, the court approved a five-day remand for Sonagazi Awami League President Ruhul Amin.
Following Jabed’s confession, a burqa was recovered from a Sonagazi canal as evidence, according to Chittagong Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) Superintendent Md Iqbal.
On Friday, the court had extended the five-day remand for Jabed Hossain by an additional three days. Furthermore, the confession statement of accused Umme Sultana Poppy was recorded the same day.
Following the completion of her five-day remand, Kamrunnahar Moni was taken to Manik Mia market in Sonagazi sadar upazila, from where the burqas were bought, and to the rooftop of the cyclone centre of the madrasa, where Nusrat was burnt, on Friday and Saturday, PBI ASP (special) Moniruzzaman said.
Earlier on April 14, accused Nuruddin and Shahadat Hossain Shamim confessed that five burqa-clad people were involved in Nusrat’s murder. Shamim paid Tk2000 to Umme Sultana Poppy, which she passed on to Moni to buy the burqas and some gloves. On the day of the murder, Poppy brought Nusrat to the rooftop, and Moni poured kerosene on her.
Alim examinee Nusrat was set ablaze on the roof of the madrasa on April 6, after she had refused to withdraw a sexual harassment case against madrasa Principal Sirajuddaula.
The 18-year-old, who had suffered 80% burns on her body, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on April 10.
