Legal notice served to make road transport law effective

The Road Transport Act was passed last year to ensure people's safety on the road

A legal notice has been served to issue a gazette notification date of Road Transport Act 2018.

Advocate Manzil Murshid sent the notice on behalf of the Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) on Wednesday.

Secretaries to the the president and prime minister, secretaries of the Cabinet Division, Ministry of Public Administration, Ministry of Law, Ministry of Home and Road Transport and Bridges Division were asked to respond to the notice within seven days.

Parliament passed the Road Transport Act, 2018, on September 19 last year to ensure people's safety and security on roads.

The bill also mentioned that accountability of those involved in road transport sector mainly drivers, owners of buses and trucks and associations related to the sector be ensured.

The president gave his consent to the new law on October 9 the same year. 

A gazette notification was also published about the passage of the law on October 8 last year but it was mentioned that the government has to issue another to make the law effective.

A 15-member committee was formed on February 17 to curb road mishaps and bring back discipline on roads and highways. 

Headed by former shipping minister Shajahan Khan, the committee was mandated to submit a report in 14 working days, but is yet to do so.
