His wife was hospitalized after the incident at the Bogra home on Tuesday night
A Bogra court has rejected the bail plea of Ashraful Hossen Alom, popularly known as Hero Alom, in a case filed against him for allegedly assaulting his wife Sadia Begum Sumi for dowry.
Refusing bail to the internet sensation, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Ahmed Shahriar Tarik on Thursday afternoon also sent Alom to jail, court police Inspector Abul Kalam Azad said.
Sadar police station Sub-Inspector Abdur Rahim, also the case investigation officer, said Alom’s father-in-law Saiful Islam had filed a written complaint against him on Wednesday for reportedly assaulting Sumi.
Prior to that, Alom himself had lodged another complaint against Saiful, Sumi and three others, claiming they assaulted him and took some money from his home.
Both parties were summoned to the police station later that night in a bid to reach an understanding.
When police’s mediation attempt failed, Saiful’s complaint was recorded as a case and Alom was arrested
According to case details, Saiful claimed that Alom thrashed his wife on Tuesday for not paying dowry.
His father-in-law also denied the allegation of assault on Alom.
Alom’s wife Sumi, while undergoing treatment at a local hospital, on Wednesday told the Dhaka Tribune that he had returned to Bogra from Dhaka after two months.
She said: “I heard a rumour that he had married another woman in Dhaka. On Tuesday night, he was talking to a woman over the phone for hours. It bothered me a lot and I asked him about it. He did not like my questioning and attacked me.”
Sumi added: “He is not a good husband. He seldom checks up on his family, and does not take care of us at all.”
Her husband, who rose to international fame under the alias of Hero Alom with the help of music videos and short films on Facebook and YouTube, had tried his hand at politics during the last general election, but was snubbed.
The allegation of domestic violence against him has also drawn ire from different quarters, with many harshly criticizing Alom on social media.
