The court also sends six others to jail for four years
A Kishoreganj tribunal has sentenced two police constables to death for killing two college girls after abducting and raping them at a hotel in Dhaka in 2008.
The convicts are 32-year-old Maniruzzaman, who also goes by Halud Mia and Sujon, and Shamim Hawlader alias Zahir, 38. Both were attached to Kishoreganj District Police Lines.
Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge, Kiron Shankar Haldar, on Sunday also fined Maniruzzaman Tk20,000, and Shamim Tk1 lakh.
The court sentenced six other people to four years of rigorous imprisonment and fined them Tk5,000 each. They will face six more months in jail for failing to pay the fine.
According to the prosecution, constables Maniruzzaman and Shamim had developed love affairs with Afroza Aktar Soma and her friend Afroza Aktar Urmi — both first year students of Kishoreganj Government Women’s College — over phone in 2008.
On September 21, 2008, the culprits took the girls to Western hotel in Dhaka's Karwan Bazar area with promises of marriage. Later, they raped the girls there, killed them, and dumped their bodies.
Later, police recovered the bodies and Soma's father, Abu Bakkar Siddique, filed a case against the two policemen.
District Detective Branch of Police, Officer-in-Charge Amzad Hossain, later submitted a charge sheet accusing eight people.
