The High Court has asked the authorities of Rangpur jail, and Rangpur Medical College Hospital, to conduct medical tests on Barrister Mainul Hosein and submit a report by next Sunday.

A High Court bench of justices Syed Refaat Ahmed and Md Iqbal Kabir passed the order after Mainul's wife, Saju Hossain, filed two writ petitions on Thursday, reports UNB.

The bench also asked the authorities to provide sufficient security for Mainul if he is being transferred from Rangpur jail, and set Sunday for the hearing.

Advocate Khandaker Mahbub Hossain represented Mainul at the hearing, while deputy attorney general Kazi Zinat Haq stood for the state.

On November 7, Saju filed two separate writs in connection with the assault on Mainul at Rangpur court.

Mainul, who was a guest on Ekkator TV’s talk show program “Ekattorer Journal,” via video conference,  made “offensive comments” against host Mithila Farzana on October 16.

On October 22, Rangpur Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court judge Arifa Yasmin Mukta issued a warrant for Mainul's arrest after local human rights activist Mili Maya filed a defamation case against him.

Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaisarul Islam sent Mainul to jail for the case on October 23.

Barrister Mainul Hosein was later assaulted, allegedly by some leaders and activists of Awami League, while he was being produced before the Rangpur Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on November 4.
