But he cannot walk out of jail yet

A Dhaka court has granted bail to Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity Secretary General Mozammel Haque Chowdhury in an extortion case.

Metropolitan Magistrate Md Mazhraul Haque passed the order on Tuesday afternoon after hearing his bail plea, which filed earlier in the day by his lawyer Jyotirmoy Barua.

However, Mozammel cannot walk out of jail as Kafrul police on Monday filed a petition to show him arrested in another case filed under the Explosive Substances Act.

Jayedur Rahman, one of his counsels, told the Dhaka Tribune: “The same court has fixed September 13 to hear that petition filed by the case investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Kazi Raihanur Rahman of Kafrul police station.”

Police on September 6 had arrested Mozammel from his Sanarpar house in Narayanganj in the extortion case filed at Mirpur model police station.

Later in the day, the same court placed him on a one-day remand.

A person named Dulal, from the transport sector, had filed the case against him last Tuesday.

According to case details, Mozammel demanded Tk2 lakh as extortion from Dulal. He then reportedly gave the Jatri Kalyan Samity leader Tk10,000.

However, when contacted, the plaintiff told various media outlets that he did not know Mozammel personally, and claimed that he only signed a piece of paper that was brought to him by two labour leaders.
