Police arrested Mozammel from his Sanarpar house in Narayanganj on charges of extortion
A Dhaka court has sent Mozammel Haque Chowdhury, the secretary general of Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity (BJKS), to jail after rejecting pleas for his bail and remand.
Mozammel was produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Saturday after completion of one-day remand.
At the court, Mirpur police sought a fresh five-day remand, while lawyers of the accused pleaded for bail.
However, after hearing out the prosecution and the defence, Judge Golam Nabi passed an order for Mozammel to be sent to jail.
Mirpur police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Bazlur Rahman, also the investigation officer of the case, said they have found important information from Mozammel during interrogation, and sought more time to investigate him.
The remand petition stated that during primary investigation, it was found that Mozammel demanded extortion money from various transport workers’ and owners’ associations.
In order to recover the extorted money and reveal the names of his associates, it would be necessary to interrogate the accused in custody, it added.
Earlier on Thursday, police arrested Mozammel from his Sanarpar house in Narayanganj on charges of extortion.
A person named Dulal, who works in the transport sector, filed the case with Mirpur police station on Tuesday.
According to the case file, Mozammel demanded Tk2 lakh from Dulal, and that the latter already gave the Jatri Kalyan Samity leader Tk10,000.
However, when contacted, plaintiff Dulal told various media outlets that he did not know Mozammel. Dulal claimed that he only signed a piece of paper that was brought to him by two labour leaders.
