4 to die in Bagerhat murder case

The court also fined the death sentenced convicts Tk20, 000 each under three separate sections

A Bagerhat court has sentenced four people to death and another to two years of imprisonment in a murder case of a human haulier driver.

Bagerhat Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-1 Judge Md Hafizur Rahman gave the verdicts on Thursday.

The court also fined the death sentenced convicts Tk20, 000 each under three separate sections.

Human haulier driver Md Mamun Mollah, 20, was killed five years ago by the convicts. He was the son of Abdullah Mollah of Khanpur union’s Hakimpur village of the upazila.

The death-row convicts are- Mizan, 30, Md Shohag Fakir, 29 Ibrahim Mollah, 28 and Ismail Mollah, 35. Md Joynal Abedin,a resident of Chalna village of Khulna’s Dakop upazila was sentenced to two years imprisonment.

Only Ibrahim Mollah and Shohag Fakir were present during the verdict and the rest are absconding.

According to the State Councillor Md Zahid Hosaain, the four convicts hired Mamun to travel to Khulna from Khanpur union in September 1, 2013.

On the way, Mamun was strangled to death and thrown into a roadside pond and the convicts took off with his vehicle. After missing for two days, Mamun’s father filed a general diary (GD) at the Bagerhat Model police station.

After six months of the GD, the victim’s father came to know that his son’s vehicle was sold by four youths to Joynal. Later, the victim’s father filed a murder case on July 1, 2014, accusing the four youths and 3-4 unmanned persons, with the same police station.

After the case was handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police, Ibrahim and Shohag were arrested from a slum in Naryanganj. They later confessed to the killing Mamun.

After the investigation, CID Inspector Amir Hossain submitted the charge sheet on December 28, accusing the five of manslaughter.
