A Khulna court has sentenced 10 people to lifetime imprisonment for the murder of a college student in the district in 2009.

Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge MA Rab Hawladar delivered the verdict on Thursday afternoon, in presence of all the convicts.

The judge also fined each convict Tk10,000, and the sentence will extend another year, in case of failure to pay the fine.

Two out of the 14 accused- Sultan Ahmed and Abbasur Rahman- were acquitted, while two others died during the trial.

The 10 convicted are Nobir Hossain alias Nobi, Tobibur Rahman alias Tobi, Aka Mia Sheikh, Khaja Mia Sheikh, Osika Sheikh, Chand Mia Sheikh, Monir Sheikh, Yehiya Sheikh and Kamal Sheikh; all residents of Purbopara from Kumirdanga village in Terokhada upazila.

On September 13, 2009, a dispute erupted about teaching Arabic to little children in the Purbopara Mosque of Terokhada upazila's Kumirdanga village around 2pm.

Following the dispute, the victim Sheikh Badruddoza was beaten with sticks and rods by one party and badly injured.

Locals rescued and took him to Khulna Medical College Hospital. He died while being shifted to Dhaka for better treatment.

Badruddoza was a first year college degree student of Bangabandhu College in Rupsha upazila.

The deceased's brother Sheikh Asaduzzaman filed a murder case later at Terokhada police station against 12 people.

Sub Inspector (SI) of Terokhada police station Mizanur Rahman submitted a charge sheet against 13 people including the reported 12.

Sheikh Asaduzzaman said: "We achieved a fair trial even if it was after a long time. We are satisfied with the verdict."
