Zia Charitable Trust graft case: Khaleda's bail extended

Judge Dr Akhteruzzaman of the Special Judge Court 5 passed the order on Tuesday

A Dhaka court has extended BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's bail to July 24, in the Zia Charitable Trust graft case.

Judge Dr Akhteruzzaman of the Special Judge Court 5 passed the order on Tuesday.

July 17 (Tuesday) was fixed as the date of hearing of the case against Khaleda Zia and three other accused. However, she was not produced before the court due to her illness. The same day, Khaleda's lawyer Sanaullah Miah asked for an extension of the bail due to her illness.

The court extended Khaleda Zia’s bail several times in the last five months, with the latest extension expiring July 24.

The same court, on February 8, convicted the former prime minister and sentenced her to five years' imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

On August 8, 2011, the Anti-Corruption Commission filed the Zia Charitable Trust graft case at the Tejgaon Police Station accusing four people, including Khaleda Zia, of abusing power by raising funds for the trust from unknown sources.

The other three accused are Khaleda’s former Political Secretary Haris Chowdhury, then- Personal Secretary to Haris, Ziaul Islam Munna, and Monirul Islam Khan, then-personal secretary of Dhaka City Corporation Mayor Sadek Hossain Khoka.
