A Dhaka court remanded Mizan for two days on charges attempting to sabotage the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) election
BNP leader Major (retd) Mizanur Rahman Mizan has been remanded for two days on charges of attempting to sabotage the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) election, in a case filed with Dhanmondi police station.
A Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court granted the remand prayer by police on Wednesday, reports the Bangla Tribune.
The court has also remanded Md Shafiqul Islam, Zinnat and Md Asad Ali for one day each, court police General Register Officer Moqbul Hossain said.
According to police, Mizan had a meeting with four youths with the objective of sabotaging the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) election. The meeting took place at Kalabagan Club in Dhaka.
Mizan also provided the men a "spycam" so they would be able to videotape and take photos during the sabotage. A leaked YouTube audio clip proves the veracity of these claims, police said.
However, Mizan's family has denied all such allegations.
Based on the evidence, Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested Mizan from his Gulshan residence in the early hours of Monday.
Deputy Commissioner of DB Mashiur Rahman said: "Mizanur Rahman has been acquainted with Ashulia's Shimulia union Jubo Dal leader Shafiqul Islam from 2008. They used to maintain regular communication via phone. They would often meet up as well."
"Mizan plotted to sabotage the Gazipur city polls. On June 23, three days before the election, Mizan made a call to Shafiqul from his own cell phone. He assured Mizan of all kinds of cooperation in the sabotage attempt over the phone," he added.
Mashiur further said that, under Mizan's orders, Shafiqul made a deal with four youths to carry out the sabotage. Shafiqul sent them to Mizan in Dhaka to get further instructions.
"On Monday, Shafiqul sent the four youths to Mizan by a private car," said the deputy commissioner. "Mizan had a meeting with the youths at Kalabagan Club. He gave them Tk10,000 in cash and promised to give them more after the work was done. He also gave them a watch with a 'spycam' to record everything."
According to the DB, the four men have been captured as well. They are- Kafil Uddin, Joy, Asad Ali and Zinnat. They are currently in DB custody, and a case regarding the sabotage attempt is being lodged against them.
However, DB has not disclosed information about another individual who was present during the meeting with Mizan at Kalabagan Club. Police is currently investigating the identity of the individual, and will later take legal action against him as well.
Deputy Commissioner Mashiur Rahman also informed that a case under the Cyber Act is being prepared against the BNP leader.
Mizan is innocent, claims family
BNP leader Mizanur Rahman Mizan's family has denied all the accusations brought against him. His wife said: "Video or audio clips, everything can be edited. These are false accusations."
His wife claimed Mizan's only crime was supporting BNP. "I told the DB that he will not participate in politics anymore. He has been inactive in politics for a while. There are several other cases against him. Cases will be lodged against anyone who supports BNP."
Regarding the leaked YouTube audio clip, his wife said: "I do not believe he planned any sabotage attempt. He is a very quiet person. These are conspiracies against him."
Mizan suffers from various ailments, including diabetes, and regularly takes medication. However, when his family tried to give him the medicine while he was in DB custody on Tuesday, police barred them, his wife claimed.
"We are very worried," said Mizan's wife. "The police have not told us how or where Mizan is. We want to seek legal aid to handle this issue."
The detective branch claims one of the people in the leaked YouTube audio clip is Mizan, and the other person is Jubo Dal leader Shafiqul Islam.
Shafiqul is yet to be captured and efforts to detain him were underway, the deputy commissioner said.
