The High Court on Monday refused to hear a petition that challenged the legality of hoisting national flags of foreign countries at different places across the country during the Fifa World Cup 2018 tournament.

The bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Zafar Ahmed did not disclose any reason behind their refusal, report multiple news outlets.

Mohammad Nurul Amin, a freedom fighter from Gaibandha, submitted the petition to the court on Sunday seeking its directive on the government to stop people from putting up national flags of foreign countries at different locations of Bangladesh.

The Fifa World Cup, arguably the “biggest show on earth,” is scheduled to kick off on June 14 in Russia.

According to Section 9 of the 1972 flag rules, there are restrictions on the use of foreign flags in Bangladesh. It requires approval from the government to hoist foreign flags outside of foreign missions and their associated establishments and vehicles.
