HC: Why road crash victim Nazim’s family would not get Tk1cr?

The High Court on Tuesday issued a rule asking the authorities concerned why Tk1 crore as compensation would not be given to the family of Dhaka Tribune executive Nazim Uddin, who was killed in a road crash on May 17.

The secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the chairman and managing director of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), the inspector general of police, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner, owners of Srabon Paribahan and Monzil Paribahan, and concerned others have been asked to respond to the rule.

A High Court bench comprising Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice AKM Zahirul Haque passed the suo moto order taking cognizance of news reports published on the road crash.

On May 17, Nazim Uddin, a senior executive of the advertising department of the Dhaka Tribune, was killed when a bus hit his motorcycle while trying to overtake another bus and ran over him, on the Mayor Mohammad Hanif Flyover in Dhaka's Jatrabari.

Earlier on May 8, the same High Court bench issued an order to provide Tk1 crore as compensation to the family of Rajib Hasan who lost his right hand after it got stuck between two buses at Bangla Motor in the city on April 3. Rajib had succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on April 17.

However, earlier on Tuesday (today), the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court stayed a High Court order that directed BRTC and Sajan Paribahan to pay Tk1 crore in compensation to the family of Rajib Hasan.
