One of the two suspects arrested over the murder of Mahid Al Salam, a master’s final year student at the Economics Department of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), has confessed to his involvement in the crime.
Suspect Mirza Atik gave his confessional statement under Section 164 when he was produced before the court of Sylhet Metropolitan Magistrate Mamunur Rashid Siddique on Wednesday, said Sylhet Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner (prosecution) Amulya Kumar.
The other arrestee, Tayef Md Ripon, was sent into police custody for a three-day remand, he added.

According to Atik’s confession, he and three other muggers, riding on two motorbikes, had mugged and stabbed Mahid indiscriminately in the Keane Bridge area while he was on his way to Kadamtali bus stand around 1am on Monday, leaving him seriously injured.
Mahid died while undergoing treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital around 1:30am.

His uncle ATM Hasan Jebul, organising secretary of Awami League’s Sylhet city unit, later filed a case in the regard.
Police arrested Atik and Ripon from Vartakhala Graveyard in the South Surma area on Tuesday.
