Attack on Zafar Iqbal: Faizul’s brother remanded
A Sylhet court on Tuesday granted police an eight-day remand for Enamul Hasan, brother of Foyzur Rahman Faizul who attacked eminent academician Prof Muhammed Zafar Iqbal on March 3. Metropolitan Magistrate Haridas Kumar passed the order after Shafiqur Rahman, investigation officer of a case filed over the attack, produced Enamul before the court seeking a 10-day remand, said Assistant Commissioner (prosecution) of Sylhet Metropolitan police Amulya Kumar Chowdhury. Shafiqul is also the officer-in-charge of Jalalabad police station, where the case was lodged. The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) Unit of police had arrested Emanul, with a mobile phone and a tablet that were previously used by Faizul, on March 8 from Gazipur. He was sent to Jalalabad police’s custody the next day. The same court had placed the siblings’ parents and an uncle on remand for different terms on Sunday and Faizul on a 10-day remand on Thursday.

Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) teacher Zafar Iqbal was stabbed on the back of his head by Faizul while he was delivering a speech at a program on the university campus on March 3. Faizul, who also claimed to be a hawker and a madrasa student, was detained on the spot by students. He was later handed over to police after a severe thrashing. After receiving immediate treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, Zafar Iqbal was airlifted to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka that night following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s order. The professor was shifted from the Intensive Care Unit to a cabin there last Wednesday after his physical condition improved. According to the noted author’s Personal Secretary Joynal Abedin, Zafar Iqbal has made a full recovery and will return to Sylhet on Wednesday.
