A Sirajganj court has sentenced seven people to life in jail for raping and killing a minor girl in Shahjadpur upazila eight years ago.
Judge Md Rafiqul Islam of Additional District and Sessions Judges' Court-1 handed down the penalty on Monday. The convicts were also fined Tk50,000 each, and, in case they fail to pay the sum, to additional six months' imprisonment.
Six of the seven convicts were present at the court room when the judge pronounced the verdict. The convicts are Abdul Hakim, 46, Hachen Ali, 38, Lokman, 53, Hasan Ali, 33, Mohammad Rana, 33, Nabir Hossain, 36, and Rafiqul Islam, 33. All of them hail from Shahjadpur upazila.
Rafiqul remains absconding.
Anwar Parvez Limon, assistant public prosecutor of the District and Sessions Judges' Court, confirmed this to the Dhaka Tribune.
According to the case statement, the victim was an 11-year-old daughter of a resident in Kayempur village of the upazila.
She went missing after visiting her nine-year-old playmate in the nearby Moshipur village in the afternoon on July 16, 2010.
Her dead body was recovered from a jute field in Kayempur village in the afternoon of the next day.
The victim's mother filed a case in the night, accusing Abdul Hakim of Moshipur village over the murder.
After the investigation, the police filed the charge sheet of the case, accusing eight people in the incident.
An accused of the case, named Nabir Mollah, died in prison during the trial.
