Khaleda graft case verdict’s certified copy likely to be released Thursday
The certified copy of the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case's 632-page verdict will likely be handed over to Khaleda Zia’s lawyers on Thursday. “We were told by the court earlier that the certified copy will be released today. But today they said it will be given on Thursday,” the BNP chairperson’s lawyer Sanaullah Miah told reporters on Wednesday afternoon. Due to the development, he said they would not be able to submit the plea for Khaleda's bail on Thursday as planned. "If we get the copy Thursday, we will plead for her bail on Sunday," Sanaullah added. Khaleda was sentenced to five years in prison for embezzling Tk2.1 crore in donations meant for an orphanage trust when she was the prime minister. Five others, including her son and presumed heir Tarique Rahman, were given 10 years imprisonment and fined Tk2.1 crore each. Khaleda’s lawyers plan to challenge her conviction in court once they get the certified copy, while BNP has been protesting against her jailing. Lawyers loyal to the party also staged a token mass hunger strike, led by Sanaullah, in the Dhaka Sessions Judge’s Court premises on Wednesday.
