HC verdict on CHT Regional Council Act: SC adjourns hearing until 6 March
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has adjourned until March 6 the hearing on a High Court verdict that declared the Chittagong Hill Tracts Regional Council Act illegal and unconstitutional. A five-member bench of the Appellate Division bench, led by acting Chief Justice Abdul Wahhab Miah, passed the adjournment order on Tuesday, following a time plea moved by AJ Mohammad Ali, a lawyer for writ petitioner Md Badiuzzaman, for taking preparations to place arguments on the issue. Attorney General Mahbubey Alam and Deputy Attorney General Protikar Chakma were present at the time. In April 2010, the High Court delivered the verdict observing that the unitary character of the state, which is the basic feature of the constitution, had been hampered due to formation of the CHT regional council. The CHT Regional Council has been functioning under the leadership of ethnic leader Santu Larma since its formation in 1999 following the signing of the historic CHT Peace Accord 1997.
