Law minister: Over 3.3m cases pending in courts
More than 3.3 million cases are now pending with the higher courts and lower courts across the country, according to a statistics placed by Law Minister Anisul Huq in parliament on Tuesday. Of these, over 2.8 million cases are pending with the lower courts, while 476,000 with the High Court Division and 16,565 with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, he said replying to an unstarred question from independent MP Rustum Ali Faraji. Some 893,000 cases – 601,000 with lower courts and 292,000 with the higher courts – are pending for at least five years. By their types, 1.8 million are criminal cases, 1.3 million are civil cases and 85,941 others are writ petitions. In reply to a starred question from another independent lawmaker, Abdul Matin, the law minister said fraud syndicates those furnish fake arrest warrants and fake cases were curbed to a large extent were largely declined due to different steps taken by the government. Anisul said the government was taking action against those who are involved in entrapping people with fake arrest warrants and fake cases following investigation.
