Sentencing lawyer: HC summons Kurigram assistant land commissioner

Update : 17 Dec 2017, 07:04 PM
The High Court on Sunday summoned Biroda Rani Roy, assistant commissioner (land) of Bhurungamari upazila in Kurigram, to appear before it on December 27 in connection with the sentencing of a lawyer through a mobile court in Dinajpur. The bench of Justice Md Habibul Gani and Justice KM Kamrul Kader also issued a rule asking the assistant commissioner to explain as to why the sentencing of the lawyer should not be declared illegal. The suo moto order and the rule came following a report published in online news portal www.lawyersclubbangladesh.com. The court also asked the victim, Advocate Nirod Bihari Roy, 60, a member of Dinajpur Bar Association, and the news portal’s editor Dr Badrul Hasan to appear before it on the same day. On December 12, Biroda formed a mobile court on the spot and fined Nirod Tk500, in default to suffer one day in jail, over sitting at her office when she was the upazila land officer of Birganj in Dinajpur. Later, Biroda was transferred to Kurigram following a widespread resentment among the local lawyers. Supreme Court lawyer Syed Mohidul Kabir and Advocate Kazi Helal Uddin brought the report to the court's notice.
