A Dhaka court on Tuesday cleared Comilla City Corporation Mayor Monirul Haque Sakku of graft charges in connection with a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission.
Following a petition filed by Sakku’s counsel Masud Ahmed Talukder, Judge Shamim Ahmed of Dhaka’s Special Court-8 passed the order saying there was no element to frame charges against him.
On January 7, 2008, ACC Assistant Director Shahin Ara Mamotaz filed a case against Sakku and his wife Afroza Jasmine with Ramna police station for hiding information on wealth worth Tk1.12cr and amassing wealth worth over Tk4.5cr illegally.
Assistant Director of ACC Nurul Huda, also investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet against Sakku on February 4 last year and dropped Jasmine’s name from charge sheet.
Following an arrest warrant against Sakku being issued by a Dhaka court on April 8 this year, he managed to secure permanent bail in this case On May 5.
Sakku, who was mayor of Comilla municipality, won the maiden mayoral polls of Comilla City Corporation on March 31 this year by defeating ruling Awami League-backed contender Afzal Khan.
