Couple gets five years in jail for smuggling yaba
A Chittagong court has sentenced a couple to five years in prison on charge of smuggling yaba tablets. Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge Shahe Nur passed the verdict on Monday, also charging the couple a Tk1,000 fine, and an addition month of imprisonment in case of default. The convicted couple, Sagar Mia and Arju Begum, are absconding at present. Chittagong Public prosecutor Fakhruddin Chowdhury said the court handed down the verdict in a case filed over the recovery of 600 yaba pills. According to the case dockets, the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) recovered three packets of yaba tablets from Sagar’s rented house at Bakaia area on December 14, 2013. Each of the packets contained 200 pieces of yaba pills. DNC Inspector Dhananjay Chandra Debnath filed a case in this connection, and police submitted the charge sheet on March 12, 2014. The court framed the charges on October 18, 2016 and delivered the verdict on Monday after recording deposition of five witnesses.
