Journalist Shimul murder: Seven accused sent to jail
A Sirajganj court has sent to jail seven accused in murder case of journalist Abdul Hakim Shimul after they surrendered before the court on Tuesday. The accused are Abdur Razzak, 40, Syful Islam, 45, Azizul Haque Apon, 55, Abu Hanif,45, Shahan Ali, 45, Humayun Islam,47, and Mahbub Alam alias Sohel,36. Senior Judicial Magistrate Hasibul Haque rejected their bail pleas and scheduled the next hearing for September 26. Samakal's Shahjadpur correspondent Shimul was shot on February 2 when covering a clash between supporters of municipality Mayor Halimul Haque Miru and activists of Chhatra League, the ruling Awami League's student wing. He succumbed to his injuries the next day. Shimul's wife Nurunnahar Begum filed a case accusing 18 people the following day. Police have pressed charges against Mayor Miru and 36 others. So far, 21 suspects, including Miru and his brother Mintu, have been arrested.
