8 to die, 11 get life for killing Habiganj trader
A Habiganj court has sentenced eight people to death and 11 others to life imprisonment over the sensational murder of trader Tipu Sultan, with 14 of them tried in absentia. Habiganj's District Additional and Sessions Judge Mafroza Parvin pronounced the verdict on Wednesday, acquitting three indicted suspects from the murder charges. The death row convicts are Sudhangshu, Subhash, Abdul Malek, Ataur Rahman, Abul Qashem, Mosharraf Mia, Abu Laal and Ershad Ali. Meanwhile, those who were handed down life term in jail are Harmuz Ali, Mostaq Mia, Janu Mia, Shanu Mia, Jabed Mia, Jahir, Bakul Mia, Amir, Dulal, Sayed Mia and Kamal Mia. According to the case dockets, a group of miscreants killed Tipu, the son of railway official Md Mohsin hailing from the upazila's Monchola area, in the night of January 7, 2011. Afterwards, Tipu's wife sued 24 people, while just two of the accused was dropped from the charge-sheet submitted by police. Upon completion of testimony and cross-examination of 18 witnesses, 19 among the 22 indicted accused were finally convicted of the murder with just five of them were produced before the court.
