Shipping department chief engineer remanded in bribery case
A Dhaka court on Wednesday placed Department of Shipping (DoS) Chief Engineer AKM Fakhrul Islam on a two-day remand in a bribery case. Metropolitan Magistrate Debobrato Biswas passed the order after Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) Deputy Director Mohammad Ibrahim, also investigation officer of the case, produced him before the court seeking a five-day remand for interrogation. The ACC on Tuesday arrested engineer Fakhrul Islam from his office in Motijheel while taking Tk5 lakh bribe for the approval of a ship’s design. According to ACC, ANM Badrul Alam of Bengal Marine and Engineering Services, applied for 22 ships at different times between 2012 and 2017 for design approval. As per the rules, an approval should be given within 45 days with modification, if required. But, Fakhrul demanded Tk5 lakh to Tk16 lakh for each ship depending on their size at different times. He had said that he would not approve any design without the bribe money. On April 13 last year, Badrul submitted a design for approval but Fakhrul demanded Tk5 lakh for it. Mentioning the matter, Badrul submitted an allegation to the ACC’s Dhaka office against the chief engineer. The complainant, in consultation with ACC officials, later went to DoS office in Motijheel Tuesday to give Tk5 lakh to the chief engineer as bribe. A 12-member ACC team caught the chief engineer red-handed while receiving the money. Later, a case was filed against Fakhrul with Motijheel police station.
