Court orders probe against 12 cops
A Dhaka court has asked the deputy police commissioner of Wari division to investigate an allegation of extortion and assault against 12 policemen and two police informants. Metropolitan Magistrate Raihan-ul-Islam passed the order on Wednesday, directing police to submit a probe report before the court on September 19. Shahana Akhter, wife of a journalist named Farman Ali, filed the case with Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court on July 12. After recording Shahana's statement, Metropolitan Magistrate Khurshid Alam fixed Wednesday for passing an order on the complaint. The accused are Jatrabari zone Assistant Commissioner Iftekharul Islam, Jatrabari police station’s Officer-in-Charge Anisur Rahman, OC (investigation) Tofail Ahmed, Sub-Inspector (SI) Jakir Hossain, SI Omar Faruk, SI Kabir Hossain Ukil, SI Shaheen Parvez, SI Laxmi Kanti Roy, SI Shahidullah, SI KM Enayet Hossain, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Atowar Rahman, Constable Saiful and police informants Khokon and Suman. Shahana mentioned in her complaint that her husband Farman Ali was arrested and assaulted by the accused policemen on June 21, as he filed three applications to the Home Ministry and high officials of police against Jatrabari police station. Farman’s hands and legs were fractured due to the assault. The statement added when Shahana contacted the police station for Farman’s release, they demanded Tk6 lakh extortion. Shahana gave them Tk2 lakh, however, the amount did not satisfy the policemen instead they implicated Farman in three drug cases, Shahana alleged. Farman was sent to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) and then was sent to jail through court after filing three cases against him, dubbing him a drug dealer.
