Land minister’s son granted bail in vandalism case
Shirhan Sharif Tamal, son of Land Minister Shamsur Rahman Sharif, was released from jail on Tuesday as he was granted bail in two cases filed for charges of assault and vandalism. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate of Pabna Rezaul Karim granted Tamal bail after his lawyers pleaded for his release, Ishwardi police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Shahin Mia told the Dhaka Tribune. Earlier, the magistrate rejected Tamal's bail pleas on three occasions, added Shahin, also investigation officer of the cases.

On May 18, a group of 10-15 armed men -- led by Jubo League Ishwardi upazila unit President Tamal and General Secretary Rajib Sarker -- launched an attack on various business establishments and the residence of upazila Chhatra League President Zubayer Bishwas over land disputes and to establish supremacy in Pabna. Eleven people including Tamal were arrested within a few hours of Zubayer’s father Atiar Bishwas’ filing of a case mentioning Tamal and Rajib as the prime accused, Abdul Hye Talukder, officer-in-charge of the police station, said.
