Banani rape: Police get permission for forensic test on Shafat, Shakif’s mobile phones

A Dhaka court has given permission police to carry out a forensic test on the seized mobile phones and another electronic device of Banani rape case accused Shafat Ahmed and his friend Shadman Sakif. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Delwar Hossain passed the order Sunday afternoon. On Saturday, investigation officer of the case Inspector Ismot Ara Ame filed an application with the court seeking its permission to conduct the forensic tests. The court also granted permission to the police for the DNA testing of Nayem. On May 18, Shafat and Shadman confessed to their crimes before the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrates Ahsan Habib and Sabbir Yasir Ahsan Chowdhury. On the same day, another accused Nayem Ashraf told the police that he was involved in the rape of the two university students at Banani’s Raintree Hotel on March 28.

On May 6, the two victims filed the case with Banani police station against five people. Police recorded the case after a 48-hour delay. Shafat and Shadman were apprehended in Sylhet on May 12. Shafat’s bodyguard and driver, complicit in the rape, were caught on May 15 while Nayeem was arrested on May 17. The plaintiffs said their rapists had repeatedly threatened them and pressured them to withdraw the case. Shafat is the son of Apan Jewellers’ owner Dildar Ahmed. Nayem is the managing director of eMakers Bangladesh and Shadman Sakif is one of the directors at Regnum Group. Dildar is being investigated by the Customs Intelligence for allegedly being involved with gold smuggling.
