A Dhaka court placed four alleged homosexual youths on two-day remand each yesterday in a case filed under the Narcotics Control Act.
They were arrested along with 24 others from a gathering, which the arresting agency Rapid Action Battalion termed “a homosexual party,” at a community centre in Dhaka’s Keraniganj.
Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Fairuz Tasmim passed the order when Keraniganj Model police station Sub-Inspector SM Mehedi Hasan sought 10-day remand each for 16 youths, producing all of them before the court.

The court asked police to interrogate 12 of them at the jail gate. The court also rejected the bail petitions of all of them and sent the 12 others to jail.
Keraniganj police on Friday arrested the youths early on Friday and filed a narcotics case against them in the afternoon. Police recovered a cache of drugs, especially sexual stimulating drugs, which under the Bangladeshi law are banned, from their possession.
Homosexuality itself is a criminal offence in Muslim-majority Bangladesh, where the highest punishment for “unnatural intercourse” is life imprisonment.
