The long running case against Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad regarding the murder of Major General Abul Manzoor looks set to meander on, after the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) once again failed to submit their further probe report on Wednesday.
This is the sixth time that the CID has been granted a time extension since reinvestigation of the case was ordered at the request Special Public Prosecutor Asaduzzaman Khan Rochi on February 27, 2014.
In the latest time petition, Investigation Officer (IO) Abdul Kahar Akond said: “The further probe report could not be submitted as I was busy with the investigation for the rape and murder of Comilla Victoria College student Sohagi Jahan Tonu.”
The IO added that his role as investigation officer for the August 21 grenade attacks had also hampered his ability to submit the report, as he is giving deposition for the case before The Dhaka Speedy-Trial Tribunal 1.
Major General Abul Manzoor was murdered while in military custody at Chittagong Cantonment in 1981. His brother Abul Mansoor Ahmed filed a case with Panchlaish Police Station in Chittagong regarding the matter on February 28, 1995.
Meanwhile, the High Court has set May 9 for announcement of the verdict on appeals for an embezzlement case also filed against Ershad.
In the case, the Jatiya Party chairman is accused of embezzling Tk1.91cr while he was in office as president.
