The High Court has granted one year bail to barrister Fakhrul Islam, who was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment in war criminal Salauddin Quader Chowdhury verdict leak case.
The bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Shahidul Karim passed the order Tuesday afternoon after holding a hearing on his appeal against the conviction.
Fakhrul and four others were sentenced to different terms by the Bangladesh Cyber Tribunal in September last year for their involvement in stealing data from the war crimes tribunal chairman’s computer. Salauddin’s wife and son were acquitted.
Fakhrul was also fined Tk1 crore for masterminding the act of theft in September, 2013, couple of days before the International Crimes Tribunal was set to deliver the verdict.
Salauddin was executed at the Dhaka Central Jail on November 22 last year on completion of his legal battle in the war crimes case.
According to the case, Salauddin’s family spent a large sum of money to steal the draft verdict and upload it on different websites to make the trial process controversial.
