SC: Finish Ekramul murder trial within 6 months

Update : 19 Mar 2017, 04:05 PM
The Supreme Court has ordered the lower court to complete trial proceedings of the case filed in connection with the murder of Ekramul Haque, upazila parishad chairman of Feni’s Phulgazi, within six months. A three-member Appellate Division bench led by Chief Justice Surenda Kumar Sinha passed the order on Sunday, disposing off a leave-to-appeal plea filed by the government. The court also scrapped a High Court order that had granted bail to BNP leader Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury Minar, the main accused in the case. The appeals court asked the lower court to consider his bail petition if the trial proceeding is not completed by six months. Feni’s Phulgazi Upazila chairman and Awami League leader Ekramul Haque was shot and burnt alive in his car in broad daylight on May 20, 2014. His brother filed a murder case the same day, accusing Minar and 35 other unidentified persons for the murder.
