Badrul given life for Khadiza machete attack
A Sylhet court has sentenced suspended Chhatra League leader Badrul Alam to life imprisonment for the attempted murder of college girl Khaidza Akter Nargis, five months after the brutal machete attack that shook the nation. Sylhet Metropolitan Sessions Judge Akbar Hossain Mridha delivered the verdict on Wednesday morning in the presence of Badrul and his victim, Khadiza. The attack happened in full view of the public and was filmed on mobile phones by some bystanders before Badrul was caught and handed over to the police. The country expressed its outrage when the videos later went viral on social media. Khadiza, the daughter of Mashuk Miah of Biswanath upazila, was taken to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital from where she was moved to Dhaka as her condition deteriorated. The 23-year-old was later shifted to Savar Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP), and was discharged in time to testify before the court on February 27.

When Khadiza took the stand and demanded justice for the heinous attack, court sources said Badrul prayed for the judge to hand him down the death penalty. Badrul targeted Khadiza in 2009 It was not the first time Badrul had attempted to kill Khadiza. After taking admission to SUST in the 2008-09 session, Badrul moved into Khadiza’s house near the campus as a lodger. In 2011, however, he was driven out of the house by her parents for repeatedly stalking the teenage girl.

The court heard how in that same year Badrul used to wait outside Shafir Uddin School and College for HSC student Khadiza, prompting her to stop attending her classes. At that time, Badrul threatened her with knives several times, according to locals. The following year (2012) he was severely beaten up by locals for sexually harassing Khadiza in front of her college. According to Badrul’s classmates and locals, he was eager to marry Khadiza as she was the only daughter among four children of a Saudi expatriate and he thought that marrying her would make him rich. Badrul continued his attempts to convince Khadiza to marry him, but was refused. 'Reckless' student Because of his engagement in student politics, poverty and unsuccessful efforts to marry Khadiza, Badrul was irregular in his honours classes. Keeping it incomplete, he took admission in Masters and completed it in 2013. He also tried to be rich through several multi-level marketing companies, but failed. In February 2014, Badrul joined Alhaj Ayajur Rahman High School in Chhatak, Sunamganj as a part-time teacher but was soon expelled by the school’s managing committee. Badrul had managed a deputy secretary post in the university unit Chhatra League in May last year, despite being an irregular student. He soon became reckless because of his close link to the unit’s president, Sanjiban Chakrabarty Partha. Then came the fateful day on October 3 , 2016, when Badrul hacked Khadiza with a machete as she ignored his offer again. After the incident, Badrul was suspended from Chhatra League's Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) unit and he was expelled from the university. He made a confessional statement on October 5 last year and was indicted by the court on November 29. In his statement, Badrul told the court that he had an affair with Khadiza, but she rejected this claim when she appeared before the court. In sentencing Badrul to life on Wednesday, the judge also fined him Tk5,000; in default, he will have to serve two more months in jail.
