54 witnesses testify in Hoshi Kunio murder
With these, the court has heard 54 witnesses. The eight witnesses are: the then Rangpur Senior Judicial Magistrate Shafiul Alam, ballistic expert of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Jamal Uddin, Sardar Marjul Haque of Rangpur Medical College Hospital, its ward masters Merajul Haque and Akhtaruzzaman, Sub-Inspector (SI) Sabuj Sarkar, former officer-in-charge (OC) of Kotwali police station Zahidul Islam and former OC (investigation) of Kawnia police station Mamunur Rashid. The special court is scheduled to wrap up hearing the witnesses tomorrow (Monday) with the recoding of the deposition by Investigation Officer (IO) Kader Jilani. Middle East-based terrorist group Islamic State claimed responsibility for the murder. Police, however, claim that members of a new faction of banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh were behind the murder. Earlier, two of the five arrested accused made confessional statements. Of the three other named in the charge sheet, two were killed in alleged gunfights with the law enforcers.
