ACC Deputy Director Md Salahuddin interrogated Ashrafunnesa at the commission’s headquarters in Dhaka on Wednesday
The Anti-Corruption Commission has interrogated Dr Ashrafunnesa, director of the IEM unit of the Directorate General of Family Planning (DGFP), on charges of embezzling Tk7 crore.
ACC Deputy Director Md Salahuddin interrogated Ashrafunnesa at the commission’s headquarters in Dhaka on Wednesday.
ACC Public Relations Officer (Director) Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.
However, Dr Ashrafunnesa, while talking to the media after the interrogation, claimed her innocence and said: "The allegations brought against me are baseless."
Moreover, Health Ministry has also decided to launch a probe against Dr Ashrafunnesa.
Contacted, ACC Secretary Muhammad Dilwar Bakht said: "The allegations made against the DGFP official were taken into account after initial verification. A case will be filed following further investigation."
Earlier on Sunday the commission had interrogated two deputy directors of the same unit -- Zakia Akhtar and Abu Taher Mohammad Sanaullah Nuri -- in connection with the corruption committed by Dr Ashrafunnesa,
The commission in its primary investigation found that Dr Ashrafunnesa embezzled around Tk7 crore showing fake bills for fabricated workshops, seminars, and training programs.
She has also been accused of embezzling hundreds of crores in collusion with contractors giving quotations for work that was never done.
The commission also found that a total of 39 quotation bills worth Tk10 crore were issued by the IEM unit chief during the 2019-20FY.
Ashrafunnesa's nephew, the owner of the Ruhi Enterprise, received a bill of Tk85 lakh without doing any work in the same year, sources at the commission said.
Moreover, the DGFP director's cousin, Faizul Haque, owner of Sukorno International, also encashed a bill of Tk1 crore without doing any work.
The total amount of Tk1.85, in the names Ruhi Enterprise and Sukorn Enterprise, was paid through Uttara Bank's Kawran Bazar branch, the sources added.
Earlier, the ACC interrogated Faizul Haque, owner of Sukorno International, on August 26. The commission also sought documents from the director general of DGFP regarding the matter.
