Barapukuria Power Plant had to be shut down following the disappearance of a huge volume of coal last month

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) will question eight Petrobangla officials today in connection with the mysterious disappearance of a huge stack of coal from the Barapukuria mine in July.

The suspected heist came to light on July 22, when a team from the Power Development Board visited the Barapukuria Coal Mine and found no adequate reserve of coal in the facility’s yard.

An official investigation revealed a shortage of 148,000 tonnes of coal, which caused the Barapukuria Coal-fired Thermal Power Plant to be shut down.

A case filed with Parbatipur Police Station on July 24 listed 19 officials, before it was later transferred to the ACC for investigation.

UNB reports that on August 13, the ACC named a total of 32 officials of the state-owned energy provider Petrobangla who were to be called before the commission for questioning.

In the first phase on August 16, the ACC Deputy Director Shamsul Alam quizzed seven Petrobangla officials in his capacity as the case investigation officer.

Eight more will be grilled today, with the remaining 17 officials brought before the investigators on August 29 and 30.
