Luxurious Jaguar seized for illegal handover

Tax detectives have seized a luxurious Jaguar car from the capital’s Pink City area on the grounds of misuse of diplomatic benefits this morning.

Director General of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) Moinul Khan confirmed the news to the Dhaka Tribune.

According to the detectives, the seized 2002 Jaguar Saloon was imported using diplomatic privileges given to the Consular of Czech Republic in Bangladesh and was later handed over illegally to the late Mahbubur Rahman.

The CIID detectives said they had brought the car under close surveillance on December 30, 2016 while it was still at the residence of the current user, Tania Rahman, wife of Mahbubur Rahman.

A detective team led by Customs Intelligence Assistant Director Imam Gazzali finally launched a drive on Thursday morning and seized the car from the garage of Tania's residence in Pink City Xenovalley in East Baridhara.

CIID informed that the total tax for this car is worth Tk15,85,421.48 is Tk23,82,888,47, which was not paid since the handover, thus making its ownership illegal.

Also on analysing the paperwork, it was discovered that while the origin of the car was stated as Germany on the Bill of Entry (B/E), the registration certificate stated the country of origin of the car was China.

There were major discrepancies between the numbers and dates stated in the invoice of the importing records, Bill of Loading and Bill of Entry for this car. Besides, a number of contradictory information has also been found in the bank information for opening Letter of Credit and Letter of Credit Acknowledgment.

CIID DG Moinul told the Dhaka Tribune that the registration of the car was done with weak and false papers to avoid governmental tax and necessary steps have already been taken according to Customs Law.
