Mitu, the wife of a then SP, was brutally murdered in front of her son in broad daylight in 2016
A Chittagong court Thursday placed Saidul Islam Shikder Shaku, another accused in the case filed over the murder of former superintendent of police Babul Akter's wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, on a four-day remand.
Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate Shafi Uddin passed the remand order after the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) produced Shaku before the court with a seven-day remand prayer, Assistant Commissioner (Prosecution) Kazi Shahabuddin Ahmed of Chittagong Metropolitan Police told UNB.
The case's Investigation Officer Santosh Kumar Chakma said Rapid Action Battalion arrested Shaku from the Ranirhat Bazar in Chittagong's Rangunia upazila Wednesday night and handed him over to the PBI.
He was arrested from the Ranirhat Bazar area in Chittagong’s Rangunia upazila around 11:30pm on Wednesday, according to RAB 7 Assistant Director (Media) Nurul Absar, reports Bangla Tribune.
Shaku is the seventh accused in the murder case filed at Panchlaish police station on Wednesday by Mitu's father, former police officer Mosharraf Hossain.
Eight people including Babul were accused in the case.
The other accused in the case are Kamrul Islam Sikder alias Musa, Ehteshamul Haque Bhola, Motaleb Mia alias Wasim, Anwar Hossain, Khairul Islam alias Kalu, and Shahjahan Mia.
On the morning of June 5, 2016, Mitu was killed when she was taking her son to the school bus near the GEC intersection in Chittagong city.
The killers had shot and stabbed her to death in front of the child. Babul was in Dhaka at the time of the incident.
After the murder, the then SP himself had filed a case with Panchlaish police, accusing some unidentified persons.
Later, police arrested four people from different places in connection with the murder.
Of them, Anwar and Wasim had confessed in court, implicating seven people, including Musa who directly took part in the killing, Mohammad Rashed and Nabi.
During the course of the probe, police had also arrested "arms supplier" Ehteshamul and his assistant Md Monir and seized a pistol from their possession.
However, the case was transferred to the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) in 2019, after Mitu's father filed a complaint against the Chittagong Metropolitan Police's mishandling of the case.
During the investigation, PBI found evidence that the former SP was involved in Mitu’s murder.
According to PBI chief Banaj Kumar Majumder, Babul was the mastermind behind the brutal killing that had shocked the nation.
Based on the evidence, the bureau detained Babul in Chittagong on Tuesday.
A Chittagong court also granted police five days to interrogate him further after he was shown arrested in the murder case Mitu’s father filed.
