Update : 02 Mar 2021, 10:03 PM

At least 12 rooms in the student dormitory of Chittagong Medical College (CMC) were vandalized after two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) over establishing dominance on Tuesday.

The turf war between the two factions of the student wing of Awami League, known as the followers of former city mayor and city Awami League secretary AJM Nasir Uddin and Deputy Minister for Education Mohibul Hassan Chowdhury, began at CMC dormitory around 2pm.

The vandalism of dorms went on for about an hour and a chase and counter-chase ensued. The two factions traded blame over the incident.

According to the police and witnesses, several students vandalized and ransacked six rooms on the first floor of the dormitory.

Later, the two factions, armed with hockey sticks, confronted each other inside the dormitory.

Upon receiving the news, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

Palash Kanti Nath, Chittagong Metropolitan Police additional commissioner (South), said: “Two rival groups of students ran a riot over establishing supremacy in the dormitory. Now everything is under control.”

Anirban Dey and Asif Bin Taki, known to be followers of AJM Nasir Uddin, blamed the followers of Mohibul Hassan Chowdhury for the vandalism.

They said that the followers of Mohibul launched the attack unprovoked.

Shamim Ahmed said that the followers of Nasir evicted one of their members from two rooms of the dormitory.

Last reported, CMC Principal Prof Dr Shahena Akhter spoke to the two groups regarding the matter.
