'Whatever the situation, we will not bow out of the electoral race,' says Dr Shahadat Hossain
Dr Shahadat Hossain, BNP’s mayoral candidate for the CCC polls, alleged that 56 polling agents and more than 200 BNP men have been arrested ahead of the polls.
Shahadat made the allegations while talking to reporters at the Chittagong Regional Election Office on Tuesday afternoon after lodging complaints with the CCC Returning Officer over the arrest of BNP men.
“Just a day ahead of the polls, the police arrested 56 polling agents. We have requested the Election Commission to release the arrestees as the polling agents are part of the polls. The Returning Officer assured us to look into matter,” said Shahadat.
Announcing not to quit the electoral race, the BNP mayoral candidate said that he would fight to the last.
Responding o a question, Shahadat said: “BNP is a democratic and peace-loving party. We will win the polls if they are held in a free, fair and impartial manner. However, it is a matter of concern that the scheme is on to occupy the polling centres by the outsiders, goons and party cadres.”
“Some overenthusiastic police officials are out to spoil the electoral atmosphere by arresting BNP men. Whatever the situation, we will not bow out of the electoral race,” said Shahadat.
Meanwhile, CMP Commissioner Saleh Md Tanvir said that the police arrested people having specific charges against them.
The CMP commissioner said this while speaking at a press briefing at Dampara Police Lines on Tuesday.
“I want to make it clear that the police arrested the people having cases and warrants against them,” he said.
