The average length of each plant is between 115cm to 130cm, the number of tillers is eight and the average height of each sheaf is 36cm
Cultivation of the high-yielding hybrid rice variety “Fatema dhan” has now been introduced in Alfadanga upazila of Faridpur, thanks to one Riazul Islam.
The young farmer said that he hoped to achieve a bumper crop production of this special variety of paddy that he cultivated on 75 decimals [2.268 bigha] of land this season.
During a visit to his crop field, this correspondent saw that Riazul’s paddy had begun to ripen and learned that they would be ready to be harvested within two weeks.
Riazul said: “I first came to know about Fatema paddy from a YouTube video. I then collected the seeds of this particular variety of rice from Fatema herself after waiting for six months.”
Fatema first came into the limelight in 2018, when she cultivated some highly potential sheaves of paddy, which had almost double the grain count than the common rice varieties.
Eventually, this promising breed was named “Fatema dhan” after her.
“I cultivated this paddy on 75 decimals of land and it only cost Tk10,000. I am hopeful that I will be able to harvest about 95-100 maunds of paddy from the land,” he added.
He also hoped that he would achieve self-reliance by cultivating this particular high-yielding variety and expressed his desire to expand its cultivation in the future.
Alfadanga Upazila Agriculture Officer Ripon Prasad Saha said the Fatema rice discovered by a farmer in Bagerhat has many qualities. “The yield of this paddy created a buzz in the country and also surprised the whole world.“
Rice can be exported abroad by satisfying the local demand if the desired yield is achieved, he added
He further said that farmers are being encouraged to increase the cultivation of “Fatema dhan” in the upazila.
This variety is mainly cultivated in the Boro season. The seedbed was prepared in November and planted at the end of December. This type of rice can be harvested within 150 to 155 days of planting.
The average length of each plant is from 115 to 130 centimetres, the number of tillers is eight and the average height of each sheaf is 36 centimetres. The yield is above 11 tons per hectare.
