50 years of Germany-Bangladesh development cooperation celebrated in Dhaka

German Parliamentary State Secretary Dr Bärbel Kofler highlights achievements and challenges of the development cooperation

High ranking officials of Bangladesh and Germany and representatives of other development partners and the Bangladeshi Society on Sunday celebrated 50 years of Development Cooperation between both countries. 

After a welcome by German Ambassador Achim Tröster, the parliamentary state secretary for Development Cooperation, Dr. Bärbel Kofler, delivered a speech highlighting achievements and challenges and describing pathways for the future development cooperation between Bangladesh and Germany, says a press release.

In order to better understand the opportunities as well as the obstacles ahead for a sustainable development of Bangladesh, Dr Bärbel Kofler participated in a panel discussion titled “For a Just Transition in Bangladesh- The Future of Bangladesh's Economy and the role of Germany-Bangladesh Development Cooperation” with representatives of Picard Bangladesh, the Centre for Policy Dialogue, the International Growth Center, the International Labour Organization and the Economy of Tomorrow- Fellowship Programme of the Friedrich Ebert Foundatoin.

The following reception provided ample opportunities to further discuss these topics and exchange also with members of the German Federal Parliament accompanying the parliamentary state secretary.
German Development Cooperation with Bangladesh is focusing on five areas of intervention:

Currently, the volume of the portfolio and additional development measures to tackle especially the Rohingya-Crisis and support host communities is about €1,1 billion.

The next government negotiations to discuss the future cooperation and possible further commitments will take place pm December 7-8 in Berlin.
