Cyclone Sitrang: Indian Coast Guard hands over 23 Bangladeshi fishermen

They were floating in the ocean holding onto drums and other objects

The Indian Coast Guard has handed over 23 Bangladeshi fishermen to the Bangladesh Coast Guard, who were floating in the sea on drums during cyclone Sitrang. 

The fishermen were handed over to the Bangladesh Coast Guard ship “Swadhin Bangla” on Thursday.

The rescued fishermen are - Dulal, 23, Rakibul, 22, Farhad, 25, Dolan, 35, Riyaz, 25, Mostafa, 50, Abbad, 35, Sadek, 28, Abdul Ali 40, Alauddin, 35, Alam, 40, Shah Alam, 35, Masud, 30 and others.

The fishing trawler "FV Jasmine" crossed the Bay due to adverse weather conditions and engine malfunction caused by Cyclone Sitrang, said Lt Khandaker Munif Taki, media officer of the Bangladesh Coast Guard (West Zone). 

Later at one point, the fishing trawler capsized due to the storm.  Fishermen are reported to have floated in the sea with drums and other objects from the ship.
